Cast Iron Skillet Maple Cinnamon Sourdough Apple Pie

This delicious and healthy version of apple pie can be cooked and baked in one skillet!

Apple Pie Filling

  • 7-8 chopped apples depending on size

  • 3 tablespoons butter (grass fed is best but regardless use REAL butter)

  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

  • 1/2 cup Maple syrup

  • Pinch of cloves (optional)

  • 1 teaspoon of cardamom (optional)

  • 2 tbs Einkorn flour (can substitute whole wheat or all purpose flour. The Einkorn makes it slightly healthier and just as delicious)

Sourdough Topping

  • 1.5 cups Sourdough starter (Click here to see how create your own Sourdough Starter. Ours is named Ms Minnie)

  • 3 Eggs

  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup

  • 2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 3 tablespoon melted coconut oil

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

  2. Peel and cut up apples.

  3. Set your cast iron on the stove to warm up.

  4. Add the apples, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, cloves and syrup to a cast iron skillet. Cook on medium heat for about 10 minutes, stirring constantly.

  5. While the apples and butter are cooking, in a separate bowl combine the ingredients for your sourdough topping. Your sourdough starter, eggs, maple syrup, melted coconut oil and baking powder.

  6. Once your apples are cooked, add the 2 tablespoons einkorn flour and continue to cook an additional couple of minutes until the  apple juices and syrup have thickened.

  7. Pour sourdough topping over apples and bake for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.

  8. Warm is best so serve immediately. Tastes great alone or with some vanilla icecream.
