Healthy Sourdough Meal
When you think of easy family meals, this healthy sourdough skillet meal ranks right at the top. This recipe is totally customizable for your families tastes. I use my cast iron skillet which makes it a one pot meal for us, always a win, but you can also make this with a baking dish if desired. This is also a great way to use any leftovers you have laying around 💕
Step 1. The filling
This is where it is really your choice. I typically use 1 lb ground beef (seasoned to taste. We usually use taco seasoning), some potatoes 🥔 and whatever vegetables 🌽🥕I have lying around.
Other filling options:
1. Preheat oven to 400C
2. If you’re using leftovers, this step will pretty much just require reheating and seasoning to your liking. Otherwise, heat your cast iron skillet 🍳 (or pan of your choice) and add desired oil.
3. Meat 🥩 cut into bite size pieces, season as desired and cook until just cooked through. Don’t cook fully because you will be cooking more later.
4. If using raw potatoes🥔, cut to bite size pieces and remove meat from pan. Use oil and droppings from meat to cook potatoes until almost soft. If using raw vegetables add them also when you start cooking the potatoes.
5 Add precooked vegetables and meat back in with the potatoes and cook together for a few minutes.
Sourdough topping: Make this while filling is cooking
1.5 cups sourdough starter. If you haven’t made your starter yet check out how here https://www.sugarstreetsweetsfl.com/sourdough-starter (ours is named Ms Minnie)
3 Tbsp butter
1 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder
Herbs if desired
Mix all together
Putting it together:
1If using cast iron, pour sourdough mixture over filling. Otherwise move filling to a shallow baking dish and pour sourdough mixture over top.
2. Sprinkle with cheese 🧀 if desired and put in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.
Optional: Serve with sour cream.
